Questions to expect in L&T interviews
Drawn from reported fresher tests and interviews (sources below), with short answers. Practise more on placd.
What is a gearbox?
A gearbox is a set of gear trains in a housing that transmits power from a prime mover to a load while changing speed and torque. Since power = torque x angular speed, reducing speed raises torque in the same ratio (minus losses). Common types are spur, helical, bevel, worm and planetary gearboxes, used in vehicles, conveyors and cranes.
What is the Ferranti effect, and is it good or bad?
It is the rise of receiving-end voltage above sending-end voltage on a long or medium transmission line that is lightly loaded or open at the far end. The line's charging (capacitive) current flowing through the series inductance causes it. It is undesirable because the overvoltage stresses insulation and equipment; utilities control it with shunt reactors at the receiving end.
What are the unit weights of steel, water and concrete?
Steel: about 7850 kg/m3 (78.5 kN/m3). Water: 1000 kg/m3 (9.81 kN/m3, often taken as 10 kN/m3). Plain concrete: about 24 kN/m3; reinforced concrete: about 25 kN/m3, the values used in IS 875 (Part 1) and IS 456 design.
What is the difference between substructure and superstructure?
The substructure is everything below plinth or ground level (footings, piles, rafts, plinth beams) and transfers the building's loads safely to the soil. The superstructure is everything above plinth level (columns, beams, slabs, walls, roof) and carries the loads from use and gives the structure its function.
Tell me about power transformers.
A power transformer is a static machine that transfers power between circuits at the same frequency by mutual induction, used to step voltage up or down in generation and transmission. It runs near full load, so it is designed for maximum efficiency near full load. Key parts: core, windings, on-load tap changer, oil with conservator, Buchholz relay, bushings and ONAN/ONAF cooling.
What is a hazard and what is a near miss?
A hazard is any source or situation with the potential to cause harm, such as an unguarded edge, live cable or suspended load. A near miss is an unplanned event that did not cause injury or damage but could have, for example a dropped tool landing beside a worker. Near misses are reported so the hazard behind them is removed before an accident happens.

Is colour blindness a problem for the L&T GET medical?
L&T's selection ends with a medical examination, and reported details say it includes an eyesight test and a colour-blindness test. If you have a known vision condition, ask your placement cell or L&T's campus team before the drive.
