Tata Motors
Core · core branches incl. ME, EE, ECE· Updated
Tata Motors hires engineering freshers as Graduate Engineer Trainees, mostly through campus drives: an online test (aptitude, technical and often a psychometric section), a group discussion at some campuses, a technical interview on your branch and projects, then an HR or behavioural round. Glassdoor users report GET base pay of about ₹3–6 LPA.
Who can apply
- BE/BTech in a core branch; GET interview reports on Glassdoor include mechanical, electrical and electronics candidates
- Campus-GET guides report 60% throughout with no active backlogs (reported); Tata Motors' own 60% bar is published for its 2026 program for graduates with 1–2 years' experience
- Document verification and a medical examination before the offer (reported)
Key facts

Interview process
- 1Online testAptitude, reasoning and branch-technical questions, often with a psychometric section; one candidate reported about 2 hours in total.
- 2Group discussion (some campuses)Reported at some campuses between the test and the interviews; candidates describe it as usually non-eliminating.
- 3Technical interviewCore subjects of your branch plus final-year project and internships; mechanical candidates report theory of machines and automobile questions, electrical candidates motors and power systems.
- 4HR / behavioural roundWhy Tata Motors, teamwork scenarios and relocation; often held the same day as the technical interview.
Questions to expect in Tata Motors interviews
Drawn from reported fresher tests and interviews (sources below), with short answers. Practise more on placd.
What is the best method to reduce harmonics in transmission lines and in electrical motors?
Harmonics come from non-linear loads such as drives and rectifiers, so treat them at the source: use 12/18-pulse or active-front-end converters, line reactors or DC chokes in drives, and passive tuned LC filters (5th, 7th) or active harmonic filters at the bus. Delta-connected transformer windings trap triplen (3rd) harmonics. For motors fed by PWM drives, add sine-wave or dV/dt output filters.
What is ferrite?
Ferrite (alpha-iron) is the body-centred cubic (BCC) interstitial solid solution of carbon in iron. It dissolves very little carbon: a maximum of about 0.022% at 727 deg C and far less at room temperature. It is soft, ductile and magnetic below about 770 deg C (Curie point), and is the main phase in low-carbon steels.
What is the working principle of ABS?
Wheel-speed sensors feed an ECU. When a wheel decelerates much faster than the vehicle, meaning it is about to lock, the ECU drives a hydraulic modulator to release, hold and reapply that wheel's brake pressure many times a second. The wheel keeps rolling near the optimum slip, so the driver keeps steering control and stopping distance on most surfaces is reduced.
What type of chips form when machining a ductile material?
Continuous chips, especially at high cutting speed with a sharp tool, large positive rake angle and good lubrication. At low speed with poor lubrication, ductile materials give continuous chips with a built-up edge. Discontinuous (segmented) chips are typical of brittle materials such as cast iron.
Explain the Ackermann steering mechanism, with camber and caster angles.
Ackermann geometry turns the inner front wheel through a larger angle than the outer so that all wheel axes meet at one point on the extended rear axle, giving pure rolling without side slip: cot(outer) - cot(inner) = w/l (w = kingpin centre distance, l = wheelbase). Camber is the wheel's tilt from vertical seen from the front; caster is the steering-axis tilt seen from the side, giving self-centring.
What is a 4-point starter?
A starter for DC shunt or compound motors that limits starting current with series resistance cut out step by step. Unlike a 3-point starter, its no-volt hold-on coil is connected across the supply through its own resistor (the fourth terminal), not in series with the field, so field-rheostat speed control does not drop the arm. It gives no-volt and overload protection, but not protection against an open field.
About Tata Motors hiring
What is the Tata Motors GET salary?
Glassdoor users report Tata Motors GET base pay of about ₹3–6 LPA, from 255 submitted salaries. Offers vary by campus and year, so treat any single number online as indicative and confirm it on your offer letter.
Which branches does Tata Motors hire as GET?
GET interview reports on Glassdoor include mechanical, electrical and electronics candidates, and campus-GET guides also list automobile, production and instrumentation. Tata Motors' 2026 program for graduates with 1–2 years' experience names automobile, electrical, electronics, ECE, EEE, mechanical and mechatronics.
What is asked in the Tata Motors GET technical interview?
