Core · core branches incl. CE, ME, EE· Updated

Tata Projects hires freshers as Graduate Engineer Trainees mainly through campus drives: a one-hour online test (aptitude plus core questions for your branch), then a technical interview, often combined with HR in one panel of about 30 minutes, followed by medical and reference checks. Reported GET pay is about ₹4.5–6.5 LPA.

Who can apply

  • Full-time BE/BTech from an AICTE-approved institute; GET interview reports cover civil, mechanical and electrical graduates
  • No active backlogs (reported); the percentage cutoff varies by campus
  • Willingness to work at project sites across India and abroad

Key facts

GET pay (reported)
₹4.5–6.5 LPA [source]
GET base pay (Glassdoor)
₹4–5 LPA base, from 62 salaries (reported) [source]

Interview length (reported)
About 30 minutes, technical and HR together [source]

Interview process

  1. 1Online testAbout 1 hour; one civil candidate reported 30 aptitude and 30 core questions (structures, geotech, concrete technology, irrigation). Some drives add cognitive and situational-judgement modules.
  2. 2Technical interviewCore basics: RCC and concrete technology for civil; thermodynamics, refrigeration and pumps for mechanical; power systems for electrical. Know your project well.
  3. 3HR / values interviewOften in the same panel as the technical round: relocation, readiness for site work, language and fit with Tata values.
  4. 4Medical and reference checksCompleted before the offer is confirmed (reported).

Questions to expect in Tata Projects interviews

Drawn from reported fresher tests and interviews (sources below), with short answers. Practise more on placd.

Civil – structures

What is the deflection of a cantilever with a point load at the free end?

Maximum deflection at the free end = WL^3/(3EI), and the slope there = WL^2/(2EI), where W is the load, L the span, E the elastic modulus and I the second moment of area. For comparison, a uniformly distributed load w per metre gives wL^4/(8EI).

Mechanical – psychrometry

What are dry bulb and wet bulb temperature?

Dry bulb temperature is the air temperature read by an ordinary thermometer. Wet bulb temperature is read by a thermometer whose bulb is covered by a wet wick in moving air; evaporation cools it, so it reads lower. The difference is the wet bulb depression, which is zero when the air is saturated (100% relative humidity).

Mechanical – refrigeration

Draw the basic refrigeration (vapour compression) cycle and explain its processes.

1-2: isentropic compression of low-pressure vapour to high-pressure superheated vapour in the compressor. 2-3: constant-pressure heat rejection and condensation in the condenser. 3-4: throttling at constant enthalpy through the expansion valve. 4-1: constant-pressure evaporation in the evaporator, absorbing heat from the space (refrigerating effect). COP = (h1 - h4)/(h2 - h1).

Mechanical – fluid machines

How do you calculate the efficiency of a centrifugal pump?

Overall efficiency = water power / shaft power = (rho x g x Q x H) / P. Example: Q = 0.05 m3/s, H = 20 m, shaft input 12 kW. Water power = 1000 x 9.81 x 0.05 x 20 = 9,810 W, so efficiency = 9.81/12 = 81.75%. Overall efficiency is the product of manometric, volumetric and mechanical efficiencies.

Strength of materials

What is Poisson's ratio? Why can't it be negative?

Poisson's ratio is lateral strain divided by longitudinal strain (taken as positive) under uniaxial load: about 0.3 for steel and 0.15–0.2 for concrete. For stable isotropic materials theory allows -1 to 0.5, so it can be negative: special auxetic foams and structures expand sideways when stretched. Ordinary engineering materials contract sideways, so their value is positive and at most 0.5 (incompressible).

Electrical – transmission

How can you increase the efficiency of a transmission line?

Cut I^2R loss: transmit at a higher voltage so the current is lower for the same power, raise the power factor (shunt capacitors or SVCs) so less reactive current flows, and use larger or better conductors (ACSR/AAAC, bundled conductors, which also cut corona loss). For very long distances, HVDC avoids reactive and skin-effect losses.

About Tata Projects hiring

What is the Tata Projects GET salary?

Reported GET packages are about ₹4.5–6.5 LPA, and Glassdoor users report base pay of ₹4–5 LPA (62 salaries). Allowances depend on the project, so compare total CTC on the offer letter.

Is the Tata Projects interview technical or HR?

Usually both in one sitting. GET candidates on Glassdoor describe a single technical-plus-HR panel of about 30 minutes; technical questions are basic core concepts and HR covers relocation, language and site work.

Which branches does Tata Projects hire as GET?

GET interview reports on Glassdoor include civil, mechanical and electrical candidates, and civil hiring guides describe a dedicated civil GET track. Expect questions matched to your branch and to site work.
