What are the features of the 8051 microcontroller?

8-bit CPU with 4 KB on-chip ROM and 128 bytes of RAM, 32 I/O lines as four 8-bit ports, two 16-bit timer/counters, one full-duplex serial port (UART) and five interrupt sources (two external, two timer, one serial). It uses a Harvard architecture with separate 64 KB program and 64 KB data address spaces; the classic part runs 12 clock cycles per machine cycle.

Computer architecture

What is the difference between Von Neumann and Harvard architecture?

Von Neumann uses one memory and one bus for both instructions and data, so an instruction fetch and a data access cannot happen at the same time (the Von Neumann bottleneck). Harvard uses separate memories and buses for program and data, so both can be accessed in the same cycle, which is faster. Most microcontrollers (8051, AVR, PIC) and DSPs use Harvard.

Analog electronics

What is the difference between NPN and PNP transistors?

An NPN has a P-type base between N-type emitter and collector; electrons are the majority carriers, it turns on when the base is about 0.7 V above the emitter, and current flows collector to emitter. A PNP is the reverse: holes are majority carriers, it turns on when the base is below the emitter, and current flows emitter to collector. NPN is faster because electrons have higher mobility.

Analog electronics

Which circuit shifts the input signal by 180 degrees?

An inverting amplifier. With an op-amp, Vout = -(Rf/Rin) x Vin, so the output is 180 degrees out of phase; with Rf = Rin it is a unity-gain inverter. A single-stage common-emitter BJT amplifier also gives a 180-degree phase shift between base input and collector output.

What are the storage classes in C?

auto: default for local variables, block scope, lives only while the block runs. register: like auto but hints the compiler to keep it in a CPU register; you cannot take its address. static: keeps its value for the whole program; a static local is initialised once, a static global is limited to its file. extern: declares a variable defined in another file, with program lifetime.

IC engines

What happens when you put petrol in a diesel engine, and diesel in a petrol engine?

Petrol in a diesel engine: petrol has a very low cetane number and poor lubricity, so it ignites badly under compression, causing knocking, power loss and damage to the high-pressure pump and injectors. Diesel in a petrol engine: diesel is too heavy and non-volatile to vaporise and spark-ignite well, so the engine misfires, smokes and stalls and fouls plugs and the catalyst. In both cases drain the tank before starting.
